DESEXING

We encourage that all dogs, cats and rabbits that are not intended for breeding or showing purposes should be desexed.

Desexing helps with behaviour as well as future health concerns such as uterine infections and breast cancer in females and testicular cancer and prostate problems in males.
For dogs and cats, desexing is recommended between 5-6 months of age, when the adult teeth have come through. It can be undertaken at a younger age if required.
For rabbits, desexing can be performed at 4 months of age or older.
Desexing is performed at a rate much below that of normal surgical procedures to encourage all owners to have this done. Often things like adequate pain relief are not included in desexing fees, however at North Geelong Vet Clinic we provide the highest standard of veterinary care so that the desexing fee INCLUDES the following:
• Pre-surgery examination
• Surgical time and equipment
• Inhalational general anaesthesia
• Recorded anaesthetic monitoring including a dedicated nurse and regular measurements of heart rate, breathing rate, temperature, blood pressure, blood oxygen, pain control and anaesthetic depth
• A pre-operative pain relief injection to last your pet through surgery
• A post operative pain relief injection to last 24 hours after surgery
• Pain relief medication to go home with (dogs)
• An injection of local anaesthetic at the surgical site
• Intravenous fluid therapy (drip) during surgery
• Intravenous access at all times whilst your pet is anaesthetised
• A day stay in hospital
• Two post-operative checks
• Discounted vaccination
• Lots of love and cuddles!

The only routinely added extras are:
1) an optional (and highly recommended) blood test
2) a buster collar which is $10-$20 depending on the size of your pet.

Occasionally further treatments are required while the animal is under general anaesthesia eg dew claw removal, hernia repair, tooth removal, ear treatments, etc. These additional procedures will incur added costs. If applicable, these will be discussed with you when your pet is admitted for the surgery.
